Frequently Asked Questions About Paver Care
How often should pavers be sealed?
Most patios, walkways and driveways benefit from resealing every 2 to 3 years. Shade, foot and vehicle traffic, pool chemicals and winter weather all affect how quickly a sealer wears, so we look at your surface and give an honest recommendation.
What does a wash, sand and seal service include?
A soft wash of the pavers, clearing out the old joint sand and debris, re-sanding the joints with polymeric sand, and applying a waterproof sealer once the surface is ready.
What is polymeric sand and why use it?
Polymeric sand is joint sand mixed with binders that harden after it is activated with water. Compared with plain sand it holds up better against washout and makes it harder for weeds and ants to settle into the joints.
Do my pavers need re-sanding or just sealing?
If the joints are full and firm, a wash and seal may be enough. If the joints are low, washed out, weedy or loose, re-sanding before sealing gives a better, longer-lasting result. We check this during the estimate.
How long does paver sealer take to cure?
Plan on keeping foot traffic off for about 24 hours and vehicles off for about 48 to 72 hours. Exact times depend on the product, temperature and humidity, and we give specific guidance on the day of the job.
What is the best time of year to seal pavers?
Our sealing season runs from spring through fall. Sealer needs dry pavers and mild temperatures, so we schedule around rain and avoid cold days.
What happens if it rains around my appointment?
Sealer should not go down on wet pavers or right before rain. If the forecast doesn't cooperate we reschedule rather than risk the finish.
Can you remove rust stains from pavers?
Often, yes. Rust stains from fertilizer, irrigation water and patio furniture can usually be lightened or removed with a rust-specific treatment. Results depend on how deep and old the stain is and the type of surface, so we look at it during your free estimate.
What is the white haze on my pavers?
That haze is usually efflorescence, a natural mineral deposit that rises to the surface of concrete pavers. We offer efflorescence removal, and it should be treated before sealing so it isn't locked under the sealer.
Will sealing change the look of my pavers?
Sealing typically deepens color and can add some sheen, depending on the sealer. If you have a preference, such as a natural look or a richer wet look, tell us during the estimate.
How do I care for my pavers after sealing?
Sweep or rinse them regularly, clean up oil and food spills promptly, and avoid harsh chemicals. Watch the joints after heavy storms, and plan on resealing every few years.
What affects the cost of paver sealing?
The main factors are the size of the area, the condition of the pavers and joints, how much re-sanding is needed, stains such as rust or efflorescence, and access to the site. Every project is different, so we provide a free estimate.
How does the free estimate work?
Fill out the form or call 401-263-0900. Tell us what you have, such as a patio, walkway, driveway or pool deck, plus the town and rough size. Photos help. We follow up to review the job and give you a clear estimate.
Do you work on pool decks?
Yes. Paver pool decks are a common project. We clean, re-sand and seal pool decks, taking care around the pool and coping.
